Back before there was Tivo, I would record Designing Women on VHS. Not because I wasn't there to watch it, but because I knew I would want to watch it again - and I did. I love those Southern broads.
The show itself is hilarious and at the time it aired I had just been moved from Louisiana to New Jersey. I was missing the more eccentric south and saw a lot of my family full of cranky great aunts in the cast, especially in the Sugarbaker sisters.
Suzanne is a big gay man in drag, a modern Scarlett O'Hara sassing everyone up and then batting her eyelashes to get what she wants. Failing that, she may very well have a gun in her purse. She isn't embarrassed to walk a pig while wearing a tiara and I can respect that.
But Julia is a lifelong role model. She reminds me of my mother: confident, elegant, opinionated, and prone to verbal fits. Yup, something worth aspiring to. I often think WWJSD? when gearing up for a tirade and no matter what the rub, keep this in mind: keep it real, keep it classy.
